Today, we commemorate Juneteenth — a powerful day in American history marking the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the last enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally freed.
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward justice and equality. It’s a time to honor the past, reflect on the progress we’ve made, and stand together as a community united in respect and hope for the future.
Here in Downtown Plymouth, we recognize the importance of this day and the contributions of African American heritage to our town’s rich culture and story.
